Microsoft has unveiled its largest single investment in Brazil's history, committing 14.7 billion Reais over the next three years to enhance cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This initiative is part of the "Microsoft Mais Brazil" plan, launched in October 2020, aimed at fostering inclusive growth through technology and sustainability.
The investment is designed to bolster Brazil's AI ecosystem, propelling innovation and enhancing the country's competitiveness. Microsoft also plans to implement the ConectAI program, which will provide AI skills training to 5 million Brazilians over the next three years, ensuring the workforce is prepared for the evolving job market.
To support this expansion, Microsoft will develop multiple data center campuses in São Paulo, aligning with the Brazilian government’s objectives to improve public sector efficiency and resilience. The company already operates two Azure regions in Brazil: Brazil South, established in 2014, and Brazil Southeast, launched in 2020.
“Our commitment to Brazil’s AI transformation ensures that these advancements benefit everyone,” said Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s Chairman and CEO. “Our investment in cloud and AI infrastructure, alongside our training programs, will empower Brazil’s people and economy in this new AI era.”
Microsoft is partnering with Nova Escola to train educators in AI, and UNICEF to reach young people through its 1mio programme, which targets those aged 18 to 25 who are not engaged in education or employment.
With a developer community of over 4.8 million, Brazil is the sixth largest contributor to generative AI projects globally. Microsoft’s investment aims to support this growth, having already provided over USD 9 million in Azure credits to approximately 3,300 local startups since mid-2023.
Microsoft’s investment also emphasises sustainability. The company is dedicated to becoming carbon negative by 2030, and has signed multiple agreements to promote renewable energy initiatives in Brazil. This includes a 15-year contract for wind energy generation and partnerships for reforestation projects in the Amazon. By collaborating with organizations like the Amazon Reforestation Fund and BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group, Microsoft aims to support biodiversity and generate carbon removal credits.
Microsoft's infrastructure will adhere to its AI Access Principles, promoting equitable access to AI technology while prioritising responsible use. The company is committed to engaging with local communities to ensure its operations contribute positively to Brazil's economy and environment.
