The Global Investment Management Industry Considers the Promise and Impossibilities of AI

Too often we are seduced by the idea that the future can be clearly viewed through a telescope. If only the world was so accommodating. There are many things, however, we can predict: global financial markets will be disrupted by geopolitics, technology will influence market volatility, and a new generation of thinkers will change the way the world values companies, products, industries and money.

This summer some of the world’s greatest financial minds will come together in Monaco at IMpower incorporating FundForum, to discuss just that - how technology applications are disrupting markets and business operations.

“As Europe’s largest annual event serving the investment management industry, we are continually tasked with ensuring IMpower addresses the crucial issues and subjects framing world financial matters,” says Jenny Adams, Global Executive Producer, IMpower. “This year we will be taking a hard look at how tech is transforming businesses worldwide and the consequences of it today and respectively, in the future.”

Not surprisingly, AI will be a central focus at IMpower this year as it is expected to have a significant impact on global GDP or the next decade. PWC Research calls it, “the biggest commercial opportunity in today’s fast changing economy,” and projects its uses in production, automation and data analysis will lead to new business models and consumer demand for products that are more closely aligned with customer wants and needs.

But even as AI has taken hold of the global imagination with promises of wealth beyond one’s dreams, some wonder if it will be able to live up to the hype. What could go wrong? One of the most anticipated programs at IMpower is the opening keynote, “How generative AI and the Infocalypse are evolving new ways to disrupt geopolitics, business and your life – today: what will be the global implications for you and your business when 90% of online content is generated by AI by 2030?”

Nina Schick, Generative AI Expert, Geopolitical Advisor, and author of The Era of Generative AIwill look at the effects AI technology is having on global markets as its applications are being used in ways no one could have anticipated.

“AI has broad uses that are already proving to be beneficial to business operations,” adds Karima Haywood, Editor-in-Chief, IMpower. “Assembling leaders across the global investment industry brings us face-to-face with real world applications, challenges, and possibilities. There is much to learn but putting it into practice and hearing from those in our industry actually using it is most important than ever before.”

Sessions expected to draw interest also include the rethink tank What will future asset allocation look like? Understanding the risks of future scenarios when constructing a fit for purpose multi asset portfolio for today’s uncertainties, including asurvey of the current global landscape and investment strategies that can be gleaned from it. This deep dive is led by well-respected, Professor Amin Rajan includes guests Peter Branner, CIO of abrdn; Sonja Laud, Chief Investment Officer of LGIM; and Niklas Ekvall, CEO of Fourth Swedish National Pension Fund (AP4)

An important sustainability issue to be surfaced brings Laura Clarke OBE, CEO Client Earth together with CEOs - Mark Versey, Aviva Investors, Vincent Hamelink, Candriam and top fund selector Sai Tampi, Managing Director, Global Head of Funds, ETFs and Manager Selection, HSBC Private Banking to discuss the rise of climate and human rights litigation in creating systemic change for good and how this impacts the next evolution of investment.
